Lawn Pest Control
Chinch bugs have always been a big problem in home lawns. Adult chinch bugs wait out winter under debris in flower beds, shrubs, and trees until later in spring. That's when the females move into the lawn and begin laying their eggs. Those eggs hatch into nymphs around late May to early June. What makes the chinch bugs such a pest, is that they suck the sap from the crown and stems of the turf grass. Damage starts to appear in late July to early August as localized dead patches. What makes them difficult to control without proper pesticide and application timing, is the fact that they live in the thatch of the lawn. At about September, the adults begin migrating out of their feeding areas and begin looking for over wintering sites. The adults have enough wing development to migrate a few blocks away or just enough to get to flower beds and shrubs.
The sod webworm is the larval stage of the adult lawn moth. The damage they can do can be extensive but is generally isolated to a few lawns in a neighborhood. What makes this worm so destructively is at night, when it comes out to feed, it chews off grass leaves and drags them into their burrows where it will feed on the grass. There are 2 to 3 generations per year, and each generation will produce more adults than the previous. This makes the population cumulative, and therefore the worst damage is in the fall.
